Climate Change — The Planet is heating up. If we don’t make changes it will get really unpleasant for humans.
Doomerism — This is extinction. You will die from climate change. We will all die from climate change — and that moment is here unfolding right now.
I was impressed to find a deeper level of conversation from the NYT on Climate change.
Here is the summary —
1. the ocean is heating much faster than the scientists NYT consults with expected.
This is bad and it is so bad that we haven’t really imagined what this reality will be like.
It’s gonna happen
2. The polar caps are gonna melt
That’s really really bad
If you didn’t know these things and want to hear East Coast intellectuals mull over the obvious with great panache and erudite verbiage — this is for you.
Here’s the podcast
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E5U5hcNbXQ
It’s a 26 min conversation of trying to intellectualize human hope to avoid extinction while confessing and preparing the listener audience that we are about to see a much more extreme face of climate change (extinction)
The interviewer and interviewee waste time circling over details of definitions — like hugging a teddy bear to avoid some unmentionable evil.
The daily Podcast interviewed 2 NYT Climate change writers.
As always Coverage is a mix of “oh fuck this is bad” and false extensions of how bad it is getting.
Note — How Changing Ocean Temperatures Could Upend Life on Earth
There is a heavy reliance on words like “could” “might” “by___ (extended timeline)”
We don’t “fully know” why
Will this cause extinction…. new answer “ well we just have to live with it the best we can”
